Beginners Wheel Pottery with Cray Charlebois

Beginner Wheel Pottery with Cray Charlebois

7 Tuesdays | May 28, June 4, 11, 18, 25, July 2 & 9 | 5:30 - 8:30 PM

  • Wheel Instruction will take place on May 28, June 4, 11, 18, & 25
  • Your trimming class will be held on July 2 to help you finish up any pieces for firing.
  • Your glazing class is set for July 9
In this seven-week beginner class, pottery instructor Cray Charlebois will teach centering on the wheel and cover basic throwing techniques. Students will explore ceramic forms as they make cups, bowls and other vessels, alter thrown pieces, and make and attach handles to mugs and pots. Cray will guide students in creativity while helping each student establish and work towards their goals in beginner ceramics. This class is also perfect for those who have already taken a wheel pottery class (here or elsewhere) but would like to review and expand their technique. After the 5th wheel session, Instructor Cray will also teach a trimming class to help students finish up any pots they've already made to prep for a bisque-firing (first firing) in our kiln. The final session will consist of glazing bisqued pieces. They'll then be fired and ready for pickup, typically in about 2 weeks!

Included with your Tuition:

  • Five 3-hr Instructed wheel sessions
  • One 3-hr instructed trimming session
  • One 3-hr instructed glazing session
  • The use of all clay tools
  • One bisque firing
  • One glaze firing
  • 25 lbs of clay. (Additional clay may be purchased for $25/25 lbs. Due to kiln risks, no outside clay permitted unless from a previous class at Main Exhibit Gallery & Art Center.) Leftover clay should be taken home or donated to the studio at the end of your 7 weeks.
  • Cone 4-6 dipping glazes from Standard Ceramics (you are welcome to bring your own paint-on glazes if you prefer!)
  • Practice time! Simply call the Gallery at 724-238-2310 to arrange an appointment to practice. Please note that practice times are limited to studio availability and unavailable on Sundays.
  • High level of personalized attention from your instructor

Please Note:

  • Tuition is due with registration unless other arrangements are made. If you cancel 0-7 days before the class start date, we are able to refund your tuition ONLY if we can fill your space from our waitlist. We are not able to issue partial refunds or transfer your registration to another class. We apologize for any inconvenience, but we cannot under ANY circumstances refund your tuition once you have started the classes.
  • Art is a messy business! Please bring an apron or wear work clothes and shoes that can get dirty with clay/paint/etc.
  • Bring a hair tie if you have long hair.
  • Leave your rings, smartwatches, and jewelry at home. Main Exhibit Gallery & Art Center is not responsible for lost or damaged personal items.
  • We ask that you pick up your pots within 2 weeks of your notification that they're ready. We have so many classes that our space can get quite full with students' work! Any pots left behind after 2 weeks without prior arrangements will be added to our "Adopt a Pot" shelf in our main gallery space.
  • This is a wheel-only course. If you're interested in working with clay slabs or hand-building, check our our other options in ceramics!
